How to Join

The first step to joining the AIA is determining which category fits for you.  The categories for Membership are listed below, along with applications that provide instructions for joining.  Architect and Associate Members join at what is known as a 'three-tier' level, meaning these members join at the local, state and national levels.  Membership in the AIA offers a vast pool of resources to help you compete in today’s market and keeps you informed of critical professional issues that may challenge your success.  We invite you to join 80,000 professional architects by becoming an AIA member today.

Architect Member

AIA Architect Membership (AIA)
Individuals who are licensed to practice architecture in the United States are invited to be a part of the leading organization representing the interests of the profession, The American Institute of Architects (AIA). Click here to learn more.

One of the advantages of being a licensed architect member of the Institute is the use of the AIA credentials, identifying you as part of the community of architecture. AIA members adhere to AIA Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct, and are required to strengthen their knowledge of the profession through continuing education requirements. AIA Member Emeritus (AIA-E)
AIA Member Emeritus denotes an AIA member in good standing for 15 successive years who 1) has attained the age of 70, or 2) has attained the age of 60 and is fully retired from the profession or unable to continue working in the profession. Members' Emeritus receive the same benefits as AIA members but now have the emeritus status without the customary membership fees. Eligible AIA members can visit the AIA National website to obtain an Emeritus member application form.

Associate Member

AIA Associate Membership (Assoc. AIA)
As the emerging leaders for the profession, associate members are encouraged to join AIA to expand your network and knowledge about the practice of architecture. As a special incentive to associates, AIA New Orleans a one-year complimentary membership up to 18 months after graduation date. Click here to learn more.

Associate AIA membership is open to individuals who meet one of the following criteria:

  • Recent graduate with a degree in architecture, or
  • Currently enrolled in the Intern Development Program (IDP) and working towards licensure, or
  • Currently work under the supervision of an architect or hold a degree in architecture, or
  • Faculty member in a university program in architecture.

AIA International Associate Architect Member (Int'l Assoc. AIA)

Individuals who have an architecture license or equivalent from a non-U.S. Licensing authority are eligible to join as an Int'l Assoc. AIA.  In addition to the many benefits of joining the AIA, international members residing locally can take advantage of the many networking and educational opportunities offered by AIA New Orleans. Professional Affiliate

Professional Affiliates
The AIA New Orleans Professional Affiliates program is for those in professions affiliated with design. Professional Affiliates must be registered to practice their professions where such requirements exist, with established professional reputations. They may be engineers, planners, landscape architects, sculptors, muralists and other artists and designers; professionals in government, education, industry, research and journalism, and/or others who the chapter believes will provide meaningful contribution by virtue of their employment or profession. Professional affiliates cannot be licensed to practice architecture. Benefits include:
