American Institute of Architects New Orleans

Imagine building an eight-foot sculpture entirely from tins of tuna. . . Or raising enough food to feed hundreds of hungry families for an entire year . . .

Canstruction© New Orleans aims to do just that. Celebrating its eleventh year and more than half a million pounds of food donated, this innovative charitable event brings together multi-disciplinary teams drawn from the design, construction, and business communities to create and build extraordinary structures entirely of canned food and other non-perishables. Originally established in Denver and New York more than 15 years ago, Canstruction now has over one hundred and thirty individual competitions scheduled to take place during the 2009-2010 cycle.

All of the canned goods from the Canstruction© structures are donated to Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana after the event and disseminated to agencies serving people in need. All proceeds from the Gala Awards Ceremony will benefit the Architect Pairing Program, an outreach effort by AIA New Orleans. The Architect Pairing Program pairs in need homeowners and businesses with design professionals.
